Expansion Joints are very widely used.

These systems specifically include exhaust systems, ventilation and flue gas systems,

including district heating, steam, oil and gas pipe systems

It is commonly used in piping.

1) Axial movement

Axial Movement applies extensively to compression that reduces the length of the bellows or to stretching that extends the bellows.

Expansion joints requiring axial movement are installed in the pipe system as necessary due to the increasing temperature of the pipe system and are installed between the two fixed points (anchors).

The extension of the pipe is offset by the compression of the bellows. Typically, for cooling or cold pipes, the length of the bellows may be extended due to contraction of the pipe system. 

Thermal expansion of the piping system results in compression of the installed expansion joint.

The specification of the expansion joint should always specify the movement when affecting the expansion joint, not the movement caused by the piping system.

2) Lateral movement

The lateral movement is a movement perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the bellows, and is a shear movement of the bellows in which one end is offset from the other while the ends of the bellows remain parallel to each other. In particular, if the flow characteristics of the system require an inner sleeve, the expansion joint can accommodate a relatively limited amount of lateral movement through shear action. For larger lateral movement capabilities, it is common to use universal bellows arrangement with intermediate pipes between the bellows, and the lateral movement of the expansion joint is in the opposite direction of the bellows

It consists of each rotation. The amount of lateral movement available depends on the rotation. Increasing the distance between the bellows while increasing the moving capacity of each bellows and the distance between them proportionally increases the lateral movement capacity of the expansion joint. Side movement can be applied to more than one plane.

3) Angular movement

Angular shift is the rotation of the longitudinal axis of the bellows at one end, which is exactly perpendicular to the midpoint and longitudinal axis below the bellows. Stretch joints that use angular shift to control plumbing system expansion are almost always used in pairs, sometimes as part of twin bellows units, sometimes as two or three sets of fixed constrained stretch joints. Intelligent use of the angular capacity of the bellows can absorb large amounts of movement. In particular, the pin units used in a two- or three-pin array can convert the tubular growth into angular rotation and control the expansion in two directions and two sides. It is important not to confuse each rotation with torsion. Torsion is a torsion rotation around a longitudinal axis, and its effects on the bellows should always be avoided because it creates undesirable shear forces within the bellows.
