Black pepper, originally hailing from South and Southeast Asia, has a rich history dating back to at least 2000 BCE. Historical records indicate that it was first discovered in the state of Kerala. Known as the "black gold," black pepper held immense value and was highly sought-after as a prized trade commodity. The Roman Empire, Egypt, Mesopotamia, the Levant, and Yemen were renowned for their export of black pepper, which was even utilized as a form of currency. Moreover, it served as a cherished gift exchanged among royal families.
Prior to the 16th century, black pepper cultivation extended to various regions such as Java, Sunda, Sumatra, Madagascar, and Malaysia, spanning across Southeast Asia. These areas primarily engaged in trade with China or utilized pepper for local consumption. Ports in the Malabar region played a crucial role as transit points for the extensive spice trade occurring in the Indian Ocean, connecting the Far East to other exotic spices.
