Chlorine dioxide or ClO2 is a fast-acting highly effective biocide. It has been studied for 200 years and used commercially for over 70 years. 

Applications for Chlorine dioxide include municipal water treatment, waste water treatment, bacterial control in cooling towers and food and vegetable processing. Chlorine dioxide functions as a highly selective oxidizer with less environmental impact than other biocide. 

Chlorine dioxide does not chlorinate organic molecules as does Chlorine. Chlorine can react by addition or substitution reactions which incorporates a Chlorine Atom into an organic compound. This leads to the formation of harmful chlorinated disinfection byproducts such as trihalomethanes (THMS), chloroforms and dioxins compared to other oxidizing biocides. All these attributes make Chlorine dioxide a very effective and efficient choice for disinfection.

Although chlorine dioxide is recognized as the safest and most powerful disinfectant by many relevant organizations such as WHO and EPA, its use has been limited because of one property of chlorine dioxide. 

Chlorine dioxide is highly volatile and loses its properties (sterilization) when exposed to ultraviolet light. For this reason, in the case of using chlorine dioxide in many industrial fields, there was no choice but to directly produce chlorine dioxide by using chlorine dioxide generator so far. Chlorine dioxide has been impossible to store for a long time or transport.
