Introduction:

HPMC is a kind of non-ionic cellulose ether, white powder in appearance, odorless and tasteless. It can dissolve in water to be binder, thickener, emulgator, film-forming agent, dispersant, adhesive in pharmaceuticals, food, personal care, building materials, ink, printing and dyeing of textile, paper making, ceramics, paints, etc. 

Application:

1. PHARMACEUTICALS

    HPMC is widely used as an excipient in pharmaceuticals during recent years. As an pharmaceutical excipient, it can be used as adhesive, film-forming agent, suspension agent, emulgator. The usage of HPMC improves the quality of some kinds of tablets. The aqueous solution or alcoholic solution of HPMC, as adhesives, could form a thin film on the appearance of the particles, which will be good for the stability of the medicine. It is especially used in the unstable medicine. HPMC has the property of surface activity, which could improve the dissolutive speed of some indissolvable medicine. Besides, HPMC also has a good film-forming property. The formed film could improve the stability of medicine and protect the tablets from discoloring.

  1.1 HPMC with lower viscosity is usually used as binder and disintegrant in granules, tablets and pills. It was often mixed to be 1.5% to 4% aqueous solution.

  1.2 HPMC has very good property of film-forming. The coating made by HPMC is colorless, odorless and very stable under heat, light, air and certain humidity conditions. Common concentration of HPMC solution is 2% to 4%.

  1.3 In order to enhance the stability of gel preparation and prevent the particles from accumulating and precipitating, HPMC is used as thickener of gel preparation and suspending agent of suspensions. Common concentration is 0.5% to 1.5%.

2. FOOD

HPMC for food grade is widely used in food industry. For daily drinking and seasonings, HPMC can improve the taste. In addition, HPMC for food grade is also used in ice cream, bread, cake, biscuit, instant noodle and fast paste food for product molding, taste improvement, water retaining and tenacity strengthening. The products with high degree of substitution have good stability for acid and good thickening character.

3. BUILDING MATERIAL

    In construction, HPMC is mainly used for mechanized constructions like building the wall, adorning with parget and caulking etc. In decorative constructions, it was used for sticking ceramic tiles, marbles and plastic accessories. It has very high bonding strength and can reduce the dosage of cement.

4. COSMETICS

HPMC is a natural multifunctional carbohydrate polymer. HPMC can be used in hair care, creams and lotions, skin care serums, shaving producs, suncare and other cosmetic and personal care formulations. HPMC is perhaps best known as a thickener for gelled products, but will function as a film former, suspension aid, lubricant, lather enhancer and stabilizer, emulsion stabilizer, and gelling agent.

5. PAINTING INDUSTRY

In water-based paints, the product is of good shelf stability to keep homogeneous viscosity and dispersion of pigments. The product shows different levels of enzyme resistance with different viscosities. Product with higher viscosity is of better enzyme resistance. Film thickened by the product is of rapid coating performance, high adhesiveness, and resistance to scrapping, raining and freezing, as well as excellent homogeneity. Further more, due to its water retention, coating performance and good leveling property, it is helpful to improve the applications of paints and homogeneity of films.

6. CERAMICS

As a kind of binder for the molded refinery ceramic products, the relatively-high concentration solution of the product can be adsorbed on the surface of the ceramic grains, which can minimize the friction between the ceramic grains and improve the lubricity. Thus the molded ceramic products can obtain the desired surface smoothness and dimension stability. Additionally, the low ash content of this cellulose ether product contributes to the excellent electric properties of the sintered ceramic product.
