Pinarello works with both the Italian National Track Team and British Cycling Federation. These collaborations gave Pinarello extra motivation to come up with a track frame that pushed the limits the way their Bolide time trial frame did on the road. The MAAT 60.1 is that frameset. The Italian team is the home squad and where their passion lies. But the British team has been on the cutting edge of aerodynamic technology, has demonstrated unparalleled success on the track, and the access to their intelligence is a boon to all of us. Before, the British frames were barely production models, despite UCI dictates. Now they're accessible to everybody.
 
This is no repurposing of road technology. It is a design made exclusively for the velodrome. The ribs in the wide stance fork and stays are obvious differences. The wider stance is better for aerodynamics and stiffness. And because stiff wasn't stiff enough, the vertical ribs add material and greater rigidity in these places. But these changes are small compared to what goes on with the rest of the bike. To better resist the higher lateral stresses put on the frame, the down tube is a trapezoid, which is both aero and stiff. Just in case you're wondering, it is UCI-approved.
 
Yes the bike is stiff, aero, and overbuilt. But to keep the weight to a minimum, Pinarello lays up 60HM1K carbon-fiber cloth and reinforces it with nanoalloy technology to harden the bike up to better resist impacts that you can't anticipate.
 
The fork also builds in extra stiffness thanks to the steerer tube. There are both sprint and pursuit model forks that mate to specific bar/stem setups. The Sprint starts at 1 1/4" diameter at the top and flares to 1 3/4" at the bottom and works with Pinarello's Maat handlebar/stem combo. Not only is this a one-piece setup with a dramatically forward-sweeping top section, to better avoid your knees in all-out efforts, but it secures to the fork via a four-bolt faceplate for a more sure connection. The Pursuit is a more traditional 1 1/8" to 1 1/4" and mates with MOst's Anura pursuit/tt bar/stem combo.
 
The Sprint bar has a 42cm width, measured outside-to-outside, with a reach of 70mm and a drop of 110mm. The stem length on the 42.5 and 45 is 85mm, while the 47, 48.5 and 50 come with a 120mm stem.
 
But the list of tricks continues on. The seatpost is an aero blade and is secured by integrated bolts behind the seat tube. The rear fork tips are not only steel and replaceable, but serrated for better grip. And just to make sure the wheel is in the perfect spot before you whang down on the bolts, it has hand-actuated micro-adjusters as well. The one traditional element you'll find on this bike is the Italian-threaded bottom bracket, reflecting the fact that traditional cranks are still very popular in the banked oval world.
 
The Pinarello MAAT 60.1 is the zenith of Pinarello's design ideas applied to the track paradigm.
