EPP beads produce a very tough low-density closed-cell foam with excellent energy absorption characteristics. The material has excellent recoverability. Foams molded from these beads also retain their high degree of dimensional stability when exposed to temperature extremes. Unlike EPS liner which could only take a hard impact, EPP liner is capable of taking many impacts, because of its excellent recoverability and dimensional stability. Because EPP manufacturing process has about 2% shrinkage ratio while EPS has only about 5/1000 shrinkage ratio, EPS is suitable for one-piece in mold and EPP is not. That's why most of the bike helmets today are still using EPS liner because most bike helmets require one-piece in mold manufacturing process. Be that as it may, some of  "cutting-edge" bike helmet liner were made from EPP by some of the big helmet companies such as POC and Pro-Tec. For the element of multi-impact managing ability of EPP, and for which EPP is one of most ideal materials for helmet liner. Compared to the bike helmet, ski helmet, and skate helmet have more reasons to be equipped with EPP liner, because these helmets will take more than one impacts when they're worn in sports. The ideal foam would be stiffer in hard impacts, softer in lighter impacts, light, cheap, reliable to manufacture and easy to ventilate, and EPP can meet all the requirement. EPP can be made in a wide range of densities, from 15 to 200 grams per liter, which are transformed by molding into densities ranging from 18 to 260 grams per liter.
