Menthol is one of the main ingredients of the essential oil obtained from mint. It is used for the treatment of inflammation, spasm and pain and applied from inside or outside (superficially). After the topical application, menthol inhibits the calcium ion currents of the nerve membranes by stimulating the "cold" receptors, and creates a feeling of coolness.

Camphor inhibits a wide range of different receptors. When induced by camphor, desensitization occurs in TRPV1 (transient receptor potential vanilloid subtype 1), and the blockage of TRPA1 (transient receptor potential ankyrin-repeat) receptor takes place. These form the basis for the analgesic effects of camphor.

Menthol and camphor extend blood vessels. It increases the blood flow to the applied area.

Eucalyptol activates the blood circulation at the applied area and heats it.
