Air Supported Belt

Air supported belt conveyors have been used in many applications on a wide variety of products

for many years. In essence this conveyor technology adopts similar design procedures and

techniques to troughed belt conveyor design.

The use of an air cushion to support the belt and transported material rather than troughing idlers,

implies that there are some differences in the application of the technology which must be observed

by designers and users.

Unlike troughed belt conveyor theory which is used by a vast number of organizations around the

world, air supported belt conveyors are considered by many to fall into the category of 'specialized'

belt conveying technologies similar to pipe conveyors for example.

The application of the air supported belt conveyor theory has generally been customized and

personalized and as a result, commercially available air supported belt conveyors are considered

proprietary equipment by the suppliers.

As a result, the level of detailed information made available for the compilation of this section of the

Ckit Handbook has been limited intentionally, in consultation with some of the conveyor manufacturers.
