Stainless  steel SUS 310 offers an excellent combination of elevated temperature properties with high ductility and weldability, is manufactured for providing high temperature service. It offers resistance to oxidation under regular service at temperatures about 1150oC in absence of sulfur gases. It is also utilized for intermittent service at temperatures about 1040oC.

Stainless steel SUS 310 is utilized in the moisture conditions at temperatures lower than the standard high temperature service. The low carbon concentration of 310S decreases its high temperature strength than 310. Just like other austenitic grades these offer outstanding toughness at lower than cryogenic temperatures however the other steel grades are normally used in this condition.

Stainless steel 310L has 0.03% carbon content that is highly useful in the specific corrosive conditions like in preparing urea.

When higher temperature resistance is needed than as provided by SUS 310. Higher resistance to reducing sulphide atmosphere and higher protection from sigma phase embrittlement is needed.

Corrosion Resistance

SUS 310 offers elevated temperature properties. The high concentration of chromium provides good resistance to aqueous corrosion. The PRE is almost 25, SUS 310 offers resistance to seawater corrosion about 22oC. It offers outstanding resistance at the standard and elevated temperature limits providing resistance to oxidation and carburization. It resists fuming nitric acid at room temperatures and fused nitrates about 425oC. It offers resistance to stress corrosion cracking even more than SUS 304 or 316.

Heat Resistance

Excellent resistance to oxidation in the intermittent service in natural air at temperatures about 1040oC and up to 1150oC in regular operations. SUS 310 offers high resistance to thermal fatigue and cyclic heating. It can be used in the presence of sulphur dioxide at the high temperatures. The regular use up to 425oC to 860oC is not preferred because of carbide precipitation when immediate aqueous corrosion resistance is required, but it does well in the variable temperatures at higher and lower limits.  Stainless steel 310 is commonly utilized at temperature about 800oC to 900oC, for higher temperatures, steel 304H and steel 321 are suitable.

Heat processing: Solution treatment annealing is done up to 1150oC and quick cooling to receive the great corrosion resistance. This processing is also preferred to restore ductility after 1000 hours of functionality at temperature above 650oC, for long term precipitation of brittle sigma phase. These steel grades cannot be hardened through heat processing.

Welding: SUS 310 offers good features suitable for all standard welding procedures. The steel 310S electrodes are preferred for fusion welding. Grade 1554.6 pre-qualifies welding steel 310 with grade 310 rods or electrodes.
