Inconel 600 alloy belongs to Nickel-chromium alloy family, is a high temperature operable alloy providing excellent corrosion resistance up to 2000oF. It is widely used in the chemical applications where high strength and outstanding resistance to rigorous corrosive conditions is required such as oxidation, reduction and chloride ion stress corrosion cracking. The alloy 600 offers great resistance to organic and inorganic compounds and sulphur compounds. 

The versatile nature of Inconel alloy 600 makes it useful in the diverse range of applications that are conducted from cryogenic temperatures to high temperature limits.

1. Resistance to oxidizing acidic solutions

2. 72% nickel in Inconel alloy 600 successfully inhibits the stress corrosion cracking

3. Resistance to sulphur compounds at the moderate temperatures

4. Resistance to nitrides at the elevated temperatures.

5. Nominal or no attack in dry gases at room and high temperatures such as chlorine and hydrogen chloride.

6. Excellent resistance to high purity water utilized in primary and secondary circuits of pressurized nuclear reactors.

7. Resistance to ammonia, nitrogen and carburizing gases.

8. Good scaling resistance in annealed and solution annealed form.

Applications of Inconel alloy 600

1. Thermocouple insulation: The thermocouples are doubly insulated with Inconel alloy 600 as it provides elevated temperature insulation up to 2000oF. Thus, it makes the thermocouples fit in the various high temperature applications. These are used in ovens and incinerators.

2. Aeronautics: The excellent corrosion resistant Inconel alloy 600 is machinable up to 1000oF. It offers great resistance to creep rupturing, oxidation and various other corrosive conditions. Therefore it is suitable for using in the construction of parts of jet engines. It is also used in the aerospace industry in manufacturing rocket engines as it retains its excellent corrosion resistance and mechanical properties over the wide range of temperatures.

3. Incinerators: Inconel alloy 600 prevents the accumulation of chromic, nitrous acid, iron and copper compounds, nitrites, chromates and urea in the internal walls of the incinerators, hence increases its performance life. It produces an oxide layer on the incinerator walls that avoids their corrosion.
