L-Valine

Valine is one of twenty amino acids that are proteinogenic, or protein-building. It is one of the Branched Chain Amino Acids (BCAAs) along with leucine and isoleucine. Valine is an essential amino acid, meaning our bodies cannot synthesize it, so it must be obtained in the diet. Good sources include cottage cheese, poultry, fish, peanuts, and lentils. Valine is found in very high concentration in muscle tissue.

Benefits

Valine stimulates muscle growth and prevents muscle tissue breakdown by providing extra energy in the form of glucose during intense physical activity. It also helps eliminate excess nitrogen from the liver, which is potentially toxic.

Functions

As one of the BCAAs, valine helps repair damaged tissues, promotes normal growth, provides energy to cells and regulates blood sugar levels. Valine also stimulates the central nervous system and thus plays an important role in mental functioning. Deficiencies in valine can cause degenerative nerve diseases.

Uses and Applications

General Health

Valine is sometimes used to treat diseases of the liver and gallbladder, as well as liver encephalopathy. Because of its beneficial effects on liver and brain tissue, valine is also useful in the treatment  liver damage and alcohol-related brain damage.

Recent studies have indicated that valine, as part of the BCAAs, can be helpful as a supplement for people with serious muscle injuries.

Valine supplements are also often taken by people who consume a low-protein diet in order to avoid deficiencies. There is a condition called “maple syrup urine disease” that occurs, rarely, in people with a deficiency of valine.

Fitness

Serious exercise enthusiasts, in particular those looking to gain muscle mass use valine supplementation to enhance performance and muscle growth. Bodybuilders often use valine to stimulate muscle growth and as an energiser.
