What is Cordyceps?

The name of Dong Chung Ha Cho (meaning an insect in winter and grass in summer, translated in English word ‘Cordyceps’) is derived from fungi, which invade insects’ body and remain there during winter and come out like grass in summer.  Cordyceps, commonly known as caterpillar fungus (Cordyceps sinensis), is a genus of fungi; when a Cordyceps fungus or spore attacks an insect, other fungus, or a plant’s seeds, it makes endogenous sclerotia using substances inside the host as its nutrients and bears perithecia outside, which is called a Cordyceps mushroom.

The caterpillar fungus contains cordycepic polysaccharides that are beneficial for improvement of immunity.  When the immunity increases, the body naturally becomes resistant to diseases; thus, the body not only develops its resistance to diseases but also expedites its recovering process.  The caterpillar fungus improves physical strength to display excellent healing effects on such diseases as cold, pneumonia, chronic cough, asthma, convulsion, anemia, weakness, male sexual dysfunction, or hypertension as well as on recovery from fatigue.

Anti-inflammatory drug

Cordyceps show excellent effects on asthma, which frequently attacks children. It is generally known that herb medicines intended to inhibit inflammation are used to soothe asthma.  However, the application results in an extreme consumption of physical strength.  Suppression of fever generally depletes physical energy; however, Cordyceps contains substances to overcome two elements effectively at the same time.  In Japan, a report said that a patient found himself healed of asthma after he regularly drank Cordyceps liquor for one month after he felt comfortable when he first drank it.
