Carbomer is the generic name for a class of high molecular weight crosslinked polymers of acrylic acid. The main differences among the polymers are the crosslinker type and density and solvent used to synthesize the polymer.

Carbomer has the ability to absorb and retain water when it's neutralized by alkali to form clear gel. It plays an important role in many commercial products such as gels, creams and lotions, providing viscosity, stabilization and suspension properties.
